Recognizing and connecting the caregivers who sacrifice for us all

Who are these women, and sometimes men, who rise to the call, make the sacrifice and take care of an elderly loved one?

They are all around us. Currently, it is estimated that about 28 million baby boomers in the United States are dealing with the daily care of an elderly parent. Within a decade, that number is expected to rise to 50 million.

To this day, about 88 percent of these caregivers are women. Boomer children spend an average of 20 hours a week helping their parents. They juggle life, work, family and relationships. They also often sacrifice their careers. An estimated 40 percent of the boomer caregivers suffer job losses. Over a lifetime, it is estimated that the average caregiver loses $670,000 in income and benefits because of the time spent caring for an elderly parent.

We believe this humanity must be honored and acknowledged. That is why AnswersForElders.com created the Noble SWANs. The idea behind Noble SWANs is to give us all a chance to recognize and thank in a special way those in our lives who sacrifice for others.

We have chosen this symbol to represent the caregiver, the “dutiful daughter”, the one who loves with passion and takes the time for a parent or loved one each day. The term S.W.A.N. is an acronym that stands for Stellar Women Are Noble.

Branded events in the Noble SWAN name will be created across the country to recognize and honor these special caregivers. The events will also be a chance for these adult caregivers to socialize, make new friends and develop a network of support.

We believe that through these community events, the Noble SWANs among us will be reminded how much they are appreciated and cherished by their loved ones.

“There are only four kinds of people in this world... those who have been caregivers, those who currently are caregivers, those who will be caregivers, those who will need caregivers.”

~ Rosalynn Carter, 1997
