Business Description:

Do you or a loved one plan on living in your home long-term?

As a CAPS certified remodeler (Certified Aging-In-Place Specialist), Renewal can adapt your home to meet the needs of your active lifestyle, maintain your independence ccomfortably, and make life more enjoyable.

What is Aging-in-Place?

“In plain English, aging-in-place means remaining in one’s home safely, independently, and comfortably, regardless of age, income, or ability level. It means the pleasure of living in a familiar environment throughout one’s maturing years and the ability to enjoy the familiar daily rituals and the special events that enrich all our lives. It means the reassurance of being able to call a house a ‘home’ for a lifetime.” —As defined by National Association of Home Builders (NAHB)

Designing for Aging-in-Place, or Universal Design, means customizing your home to meet your immediate and long-term individual needs, but this kind of remodeling doesn’t have to look or feel institutional. As a design-build firm, Renewal can seamlessly incorporate these elements into any remodel. Such design features can include:

Grab bars | Walk-in tubs | Shower seats | Wider doorways and hallways | Increased artificial and/or natural lighting | Wheelchair accessible sinks and vanities | Easy access storage | Raised dishwasher | Rounded countertops | Home automation systems

Meet Peter Michelson:
As a fourth generation construction professional, Peter grew up helping out with the family business in the Boston area, and later worked as a carpenter for various remodeling companies in San Francisco and the Hudson Valley region.

After graduating from the University of Michigan with a BA in History, Peter spent time working in San Francisco for several firms on a variety of construction projects, ranging from high rises to historic restorations to remodeling projects. Next came extensive travel in Asia and teaching English in Taiwan. Peter returned to the U.S. to earn a Masters degree in education and became a teacher at the Waldorf School of Atlanta.

In 2001, Peter “retired” from teaching and rolled his family background, Waldorf education and work experience into a new endeavor, Renewal Design-Build an Atlanta home remodeling company. As a business owner, Peter has built Renewal Design-Build into one of Atlanta’s premier home renovation companies. Since 2001, Renewal Design-Build has completed hundreds of home remodeling projects and earned numerous awards for design, craftsmanship and customer service.

In addition to running Renewal Design-Build, Peter is a graduate of the Leadership DeKalb Class of 2011, the 2014-2015 President of the Rotary Club of Decatur, a board member of The Waldorf School of Atlanta, and an Advisory Board member of the Lifecycle Building Center. Peter has also managed & coached baseball for Druid Hills Youth Sports since 2010 and enjoys bass fishing with his two sons.
