Most people would immediately answer "the kitchen", when asked what room causes the most household injuries, however, according to a new report by the Center For Disease Control and Prevention, the correct answer is the bathroom.

Balance is one of the main reasons for falls because sight, inner ear sensory, and proprioception (the neurological sense of where you are in space) diminish as we age.  We need two of these three senses to be working properly in order to have good balance. When vision and hearing begin to fail and we become less aware of where our feet are; accidents frequently occur.

Also contributing to falls are medications side effects, stiffness in the joints, slower reflexes, improper use of assistive devices, and poorly placed household items. It is important to keep the bathroom floor free from items so your loved one is able to move freely. Also, having a grab bar for assistance, bathtub mats, and non-skid strips can decrease emergency room visits greatly.
